The cultural and artistic community in Egypt is anticipating the opening of the art exhibition “In the Company of Mahmoud Saeed,” which comes on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the passing of the pioneering artist. The exhibition will be opened by the Minister of Culture, Dr. Ahmed Fouad Hanno, on Tuesday, July 16, at 7:30 pm at the Arts Complex (Aisha Fahmy Palace). In Zamalek), in the presence of a group of art professors, critics, diplomatic and public figures, and active figures in the Egyptian plastic movement.
On this occasion, Dr. Walid Qanoush - Head of the Fine Arts Sector - stated, “The “In the Company of Mahmoud Saeed” exhibition, in addition to being one of the rare and qualitative artistic performances, is in essence a very important historical and research exhibition that comes at a time when interest in modern and contemporary Egyptian art is increasing in academic circles. Museums and major international auctions, which prompted a number of researchers to study artistic movements in Egypt and write about the most famous Egyptian artists and pioneers.
I believe that the above has motivated many to research and explore the legacy of the vanguard of the Egyptian plastic movement and how it began at the hands of the first generation, and what was the cultural climate at the beginning of the twentieth century, the period during which the Egyptian plastic movement began to take shape, influenced and benefiting from the momentum of cultural change within Egyptian society, and the beginning of an intellectual renaissance. Egyptian art was one of the most important fruits of the interaction between Egyptian culture and European cultures at that time.”
Qanoush added: “This qualitative display of a group of rare artistic masterpieces is in fact more complex than a mere art exhibition because it rather pushes towards an evaluation of that period with great interest, and an evaluation of the creative legacy of the early pioneers. How did they embody the idea of exchanging cultures? How did their works reflect What are the values of the Egyptian Renaissance Project? This is in order to discover other aspects of Egypt’s modern history, and real dimensions of the era of the first pioneers and even the second and third generations who contributed to establishing the foundations of modern Egyptian art.”
It should be noted that the show includes 40 of Mahmoud Saeed’s masterpieces, in addition to 75 works by his creative friends: (Emilia Casonato - Orturo Zanieri - Giuseppe Sebasti - Laurent Salinas - Roger Preval - Aristomenis Angeloblou - Aristide Papageorge - Clea Badaro - Charles Puiglan - Enrico Brandani - Carlo Soares - Paul Richard - Louis Julien - Joseph Mizrahi)
