Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to invite you Freestyle Cairo, an exhibition that captures the artistic dialogue between painter Essam Alaa and photographer Luigerman.
“Freestyle Cairo” offers viewers a unique perspective on the vibrant city of Cairo, with Luigerman, a Colombian photographer, exploring the world of Cairo with an outsider’s eye, while the painter Essam Alaa reflects on a world in which he’s been thoroughly immersed since birth.
The two artists do not aim to present a faithful mirror of the city; instead, they each interpret and transpose their perspectives through the mediums of painting and photography. In the manner of the renowned photographer Etienne Sved, who published the remarkable photo book “Egypt Face to Face” in 1954, Essam Alaa’s paintings and Luigerman’s photography capture spontaneous expressions of emotions, sensations, and the vibrancy of a magical and ancient city, as well as explore the immutable forms of Cairo life, including human attitudes, looks, gestures, and movements that persist in this urban world.
Join us at the opening, Sunday, May 19, at 6 PM. The exhibition is running until 12 June.
