A Poetry and Critical Workshop at the Ahmed Shawqi Museum Transforms into a Visual Experience: Visual Artists Reinterpret the "Prince of Poets" Through Painting

As part of the Ministry of Culture's celebrations marking the centenary of Ahmed Shawqi's crowning as the Prince of Poets,

Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Gihan Zaki, Minister of Culture, the Visual Arts Sector, headed by Professor Dr. Mahmoud Hamed, organized a poetry and critical workshop entitled "On Shawqi's Enduring Value." The workshop was hosted by the Ahmed Shawqi Museum, under the supervision of the General Administration for Cultural Promotion within the Visual Arts Sector.

It took place on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at the Ahmed Shawqi Museum.

This event reflects the Ministry of Culture's commitment to reinterpreting Egypt's literary and artistic icons.

The event offered a unique experience, going beyond mere critical and poetic presentations to become an interactive space that seamlessly integrated literary criticism and visual art. The workshop featured a select group of visual artists who drew inspiration from the museum's collection, the personality of Ahmed Shawqi, and his creative journey, in a move that exemplifies the integration of various art forms within a unified creative context.

The workshop hosted Professor Dr. Ahmed Balboula, Dean of the Faculty of Dar Al-Ulum at Cairo University, who presented a critical reading of Ahmed Shawqi's poetic experience and its aesthetic and intellectual dimensions. Dr. El-Sayed El-Essawy moderated the workshop, fostering a dialogue that combined literary analysis with creative engagement with the artworks created by the artists during the event.

The workshop transformed into an open space for dialogue between word and image, where the artists interacted with the poetic text through visual art, drawing inspiration from the place as an integral part of the creative experience. This imbued the resulting works with a symbolic depth that reflects both the presence of the museum and the personality of Shawqi. Experience has shown that celebrating Ahmed Shawqi's legacy is not limited to critical reading, but extends to its artistic reproduction across multiple media, thus reinforcing the idea of integration between the arts and establishing a new approach to cultural events based on dynamic interaction between creators from various disciplines.
