University of Sfax
The Higher Institute of Arts and Crafts of Sfax, along with the Institute's "Art - Design - Crafts" Research Unit and the Laboratory of Semiotics and Discourse Analysis (University of Oran 1 Ahmed Ben Bella, Oran, Algeria), are organizing an international scientific symposium on "Creative Thinking: Between Conceptualization and Realization"
April 3, 2, 1, 2026
What distinguishes the creative process, in general, is that it requires a specific thinking framework that leads to the emergence of the artwork from its birth as an abstract idea, passing through various stages of thinking, experimentation, and development, with all the special rituals involved, whose main concern is to generate the procedural from the mental and adapt the floating idea to specific practice. Studying this process involves following the stages of creating the artwork and the ways in which its sensory features are completed, as it serves as a transition point toward conceptual extensions, semantic references, and practical applications. The creative approach engages within the logic of the single piece, its connection to the uniqueness and novelty of the fantastical representation of the issues raised, and the urgency of current technologies and variables. This requires a constructive path that has become a modern consecration of the identity of the creator, who is credited with soaring in the realms of the imaginary and the fantastic, maneuvering between the possible and the achievable, and taking the rational toward a symbolic pleasure that disrupts constants, penetrates taboos, and shatters the submissiveness of signifiers to a single reference. This is done in order to reveal the self's energy in constructing layers of meaning, especially since it is now nourished by the dynamic relationship between the conceptual state of the artwork on the one hand and its final sensory form on the other. This embraces the characteristics of creative approach and fulfills the "need" expected from the artist's achievements in general. The adventure of transforming a work of art from its physical state to its final form is based on an unspoken effort. However, when it is made available to the public, it becomes a subject open to criticism and interpretation, opening up new avenues for reading the artwork. It also reveals the artist's preoccupation with achieving the principle of utility and enhancing the functional efficiency of the innovative objects, a concern of the artist-designer.
