She draws to express her love for art, and creates to achieve her dream, which is to become a plastic artist on an international level. Art was a talent she had since childhood, and it has grown with her and become her unfailing passion. Not a day goes by without Wasmiya Bint Musabah Al Zaidi - a plastic arts teacher - practicing this hobby. Sumaya participated in several exhibitions, including those inside the Sultanate of Oman in universities, colleges, and museums, as well as in the Omani Society for Fine Arts and in schools. Outside of it, she participated in exhibitions in Egypt, Russia, Kuwait, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates, presenting in those exhibitions up to 30 paintings of various sizes and colors. Including oil, watercolor and acrylic colours. In addition to that, Somaya entered the field of digital design to keep pace with technical development. Currently, Al-Zaidiyah is preparing some works to participate in the Amman Exhibition in the heart of Kuwait, and an exhibition in the Arab Republic of Egypt entitled “Arab Stars Exhibition” at the Egyptian Public Library. She will also participate in Exhibition in Morocco, we met the artist Somaya Al-Zaidi, to get to know her and her artistic career, so here is what happened:
It is noticeable in your paintings that they tend to the beauty of nature, so do you transfer nature to your paintings? What touches your artistic sense the most?
Yes... This is because nature offers a wide range of shapes, colors and multiple patterns, and gives artists the opportunity to show their imagination and creativity in designing unique and beautiful works of art. By looking at nature, artists can find inspiration to design artistic paintings that express beauty, movement and natural life. They can also find inspiration in the geometric shapes and patterns found in nature, so the artist has ideas that he turns into reality through drawing, and this is what I find in my paintings.
However, I noticed diversity in your work, between graphic and realistic. In which school did you find yourself most?
Indeed, my paintings vary between realistic and graphic, but I always find myself drawing more graphics. There is a saying that has been firmly established in my mind, “We can all become artists, whether by drawing, sculpting, playing, or art.” However, graphics are due to a person’s ability to create paintings and designs that attract the viewer with creative and new ideas in the artistic edifice. I can also seek help from tangible reality until we reach New thought and art.
Is wide imagination required in the field of art?
Certainly, imagination is important in creating and completing the plastic idea, because the artist who immerses himself in it brings back it and his various discoveries to add it to reality, identity, self, situation, and craftsmanship, so he achieves, innovates, and shines more with the idea and art, but imagination requires extensive study, continuous depth, and visual nourishment of previous and diverse works to master it. For my part, yes, I sometimes combine reality and imagination in artistic paintings so that the viewer can enjoy standing at my painting for a long time and extracting the details after examining them.
Drawing may be a source of livelihood.. Have your paintings become your source of livelihood?
I can say that yes, art has become my source of livelihood. We can now sell paintings on websites locally and internationally and receive requests, especially for face painting and on occasions, and also display them at public auction and other sources from which we can make money.
Can we say that the one who does not master graphic art is an incompetent painter?
Graphic design originates from the visual artist. We can say: “Not every visual artist is a graphic designer.” In the artistic edifice, we find skilled visual artists who have reached the international level, but you do not find them inclined to draw graphics and design (and this is up to the artist), and graphic design is not Difficult, but it needs practice and attempts, just as the watercolor artist tries to master his painting. Graphic is a creative work that mixes art and technology with the aim of communicating ideas and using the fewest number of words because it is an art based on visual concepts and produced either manually or using a computer.
Between shading, coloring and merging colors, where does your skill lie?
We automatically find that the artist always uses shading, coloring, and mixing colors in his paintings, and this is what I do. Mixing colors is a way to highlight the beauty of the painting. These skills must be found in every artist’s painting to highlight the details, features, artistic blocks, and artistic elements. A wonderful view in which the colors harmonize with the shapes to attract the viewer.
What are the basics of drawing?
To obtain the drawing skill, we rely on 3 very important things, which are (mind-eye-hand); As the eye looks and notices the details of the shapes, and the mind works to store them inside it and summons them when needed, and the hand implements what the mind decides, so do not rush to use the hand before the mind, and the three together (the mind - the eye - the hand) form what is known as perception, after which we can move on to the shapes By learning the types of lines and colors, the method of combining colors, moving on to shading, achieving ratio and proportion, and other matters related to drawing.
It is possible that the artist will suffer a period of apathy, so what are the reasons? And how to regain his passion and activity again?
The reasons are due to the psychological state of the painter. Sometimes some paint to express themselves, while others express what they see or to embody. The psychological state is one of the most important factors that make the artist not give importance to his drawings, so they become aimless. For another activity, or to rush into drawing just to complete it and finish it without giving it its right, or to reach a state in which it feels that all the drawings appear in the painter’s eye that they are within reach, and all of this may lead to abandoning the idea of learning and self-development, and even drawing.
Among the international artists at the level of art schools, “Van Gogh” and “Claude Monet”, had an impact on my paintings through brush strokes on the painting. Master the art of watercolor.
