Christie's has opened its London headquarters for an exhibition on Arab art. The exhibition, titled "Ahmed Mater: Blown by the Wind", will run from July 17 to August 22. It traces Mater's artistic journey from his early days to the present, and explores Mater's unique vision and reflections on the social and cultural transformations in Saudi Arabia and the Arab world. Ahmed Mater is known for his diverse use of artistic media. Throughout his career, he has used photography, video, paintings, sculptures, and installations, some of which we expect to see in the upcoming exhibition. However, Dr. Reda Al-Momani, Chairman of the Middle East and Africa Department at Christie's and the exhibition's coordinator, who is still in the midst of arranging the exhibition and selecting the participating works, preferred to speak to Asharq Al-Awsat about the importance of the artist, his artistic career, and the influences that shaped his career. According to Dr. The exhibition will trace the artist’s creative roots, starting from the experimental phase he went through during his studies at the College of Medicine, the impact of his artistic practices in the Al-Miftaha Fine Arts Village in Abha, and then playing a fundamental role in launching the contemporary art movement in the Kingdom through the “Edge of Arabia” initiative, which launched the names of many of the most famous contemporary artists in the Kingdom today. The exhibition presents a group of important works, including abstract works that express his beginnings, then works from the “Istinarat” series, which is distinguished by using X-ray images integrated with Islamic decorations. The exhibition is expected to include works from the “Desert of Pharan” project, up to one of his productions, the book Magnetism, which he is launching for the first time at Christie’s.
